RESPONSIBILITIES

Help to keep the Union strong

Union members have a moral responsibility to help keep the Union strong. This means:

  • Help the Union to preserve the Union contract and the rights and benefits that the members of our Union have fought hard to win and maintain over many years of struggle.

  • Report contract violations by management to the Union.

  • Support your co-workers when they are the victims of unjust treatment by management.

  • Show solidarity with the members of our Union and other unions.

  • Actively support Union rallies and picket lines.

  • Help unorganized workers win the dignity of a Hotel Trades Council contract.

REMEMBER: No one will be required to pay anything to the Union unless and until the Union wins recognition and negotiates a Union contract and a majority of workers have voted to approve that contract.

Pay dues, initiation fees, and Defense Fund fees

Union dues are paid weekly by every union member. Dues range between $6.58 and $14.50 per week, depending on job classification. The initiation fee is $100 and is paid in installments of $12.50 per week for eight weeks. The initiation fee is paid only once by new Union members. If you get a job in another hotel, club or restaurant where the workers are represented by the Union, you don't have to pay it again if you have maintained your membership. The initiation fee and union dues pay for the expenses of operating the Union.

Union members are also expected to contribute to the Union's Defense Fund. This is done through payments of $10 per week for two years. After that, members contribute $2.00 per month to the Defense Fund. The Defense Fund pays strike benefits to Union members who are on strike and pays for costly, but necessary, organizing drives at non-union hotels, among other things. If non-union workers vote to strike, eligible employees will be paid strike benefits.
