Senate Republicans block confirmation of President Obama's NLRB nominee

Republican Senators succeeded in blocking a final vote on the appointment of labor lawyer Craig Becker to the National Labor Relations Board. President Barack Obama nominated Becker to fill one of three vacancies on the five-member board. For more than two years, three of the five seats on the NLRB have been vacant, and an extensive backlog of important cases has built up. The President has the power to appoint him to the board while Congress is in recess but whether he will exercise his power to do so remains to be seen. In his weekly column in the Hotel Voice, NYHTC President Peter Ward discusses why it is important for this impasse to be ended and the NLRB restored to its full operational strength.
